Vietnam veterans from Kentucky are honored in a special way at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Built in 1988, the granite memorial overlooks the state Capitol and is engraved with the names of 1,108 Kentuckians who died during the war. A striking addition is a sundial rising from the granite.
To honor the soldiers, the sundial shadow points to each name on the anniversary of their death. In a special tribute to those listed as Prisoners of War or Missing in Action, the names are engraved behind the large sundial piece so a shadow will never fall on these names.
