More Kentucky high school students play soccer than basketball. And archery has almost as many participants as baseball.
That’s part of the changing picture of high school athletics, as documented by a recent report from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
All told, almost 107,000 high school students competed in 13 sports and six sport-activities in the 2018-2019 school year, a slight increase over the previous year.
The number of students playing football is on the decline – matching national trends. But football is still the most popular sport in the state with more than 13,000 participants.
