Have you heard of indoor farming? It may be coming to Appalachia.
AppHarvest plans to build a 2.76 million-square-foot indoor farming facility, to provide fresh produce to the East Coast. This controlled environment means food can be produced with less water and no pesticides.
Located on 60 acres in Morehead, founders say they can cut water use by about 90 percent – and grow vegetables year-round close to population centers (rather than ship vegetables from more tropical locations).
In the past few months, the project has been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and Fast Company.
