Greek tragedies, Japanese heritage and playwright Leah Nanako Winkler’s Kentucky hometown inspired the play “Kentucky,” which debuted in October at Chicago’s Theater Wit.
Winkler tells the story of a woman returning to the Kentucky town where she grew up to save her sister from a misguided marriage. The unique coming of age story is full of heart as love, identity and religion collide upon the lead character’s homecoming in Kentucky.
Based on elements of her own life, the comedic play was called “incredibly fun” and “absolutely hilarious” by the Chicago Tribune and lauded for its great script and smart staging.
