Kentucky Dummies Draw Visitors From Across The Globe

Ventriloquism is a cornerstone of entertainment history, yet there is only one place in the world dedicated to the centuries-old performance art — Kentucky’s Vent Haven Museum.

The unique exhibit began as the personal collection of William Shakespeare Berger, a Cincinnati businessman who amassed an extensive selection of dummies, photos, scripts, playbills, recordings and other memorabilia starting in the 1930s.

Located in Berger’s hometown of Fort Mitchell, KY, Vent Haven opened to the public in 1973 and its collection has since doubled. Today, visitors can view more than 900 dummies — such as famed ventriloquist Edgar John Bergen’s longtime sidekick, Charlie McCarthy.
