Kentucky’s Greatest: Best Derby bets aren’t always at the track

Attending Derby at Keeneland gives you much of the loveliness of Derby at Churchill Downs, with less hassle and expense.

Louisville may host the race, but the Derby belongs to Kentucky. Here are our best bets for celebrating the Derby outside Louisville:

• Keeneland – Elegant hats, betting windows, all for $5 admission and free parking. Sure bet.

• Teas, brunches, etc. – Across the state, organizations are hosting events where people can dress up in hats and enjoy the day.

• Races, any sort – Footraces and drag races. The winner’s circle isn’t just for horses.

• My Old Kentucky Home – Don’t just sing it. Visit it (currently featuring a special Derby exhibit).

• Bourbon anywhere: Churchill’s Julep is iconic. But you can do better at home.
